4 Wonderful and Inspiring Quotes About Art

September 7, 2019Will PetersartNo Comments

Did you know art used to be an Olympic event?

Art has existed since the earliest accounts of human history. From drawings in caves depicting ancient human life to digital logo design for businesses, art continues to make a huge impact on our lives.

We are constantly surrounded by art.

From visual art to music and literature, the arts compel our emotions and help affect our mood. This is why art has been the overall influence for so many people and many great minds spoke in support of the arts.

Here are 4 inspiring quotes about art.

1. “A picture is a poem without words.” – Horace

Horace was one of the leading lyric poets in ancient Rome and he led the movement during the time of Augustus (or Octavian).

Horace was a man who knew a lot about words. He crafted genius lyrics and clever verses but is also famous for producing amazing quotes.

His view of pictures as poetry is accurate. While “a picture can say a thousand words,” the words that pictures and paintings convey are those of beauty and depth.

2. “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” – Pablo Picasso

Think about the daily grind. We wake up, work for 8+ hours a day, and then we do it all over again the next day. Even though we may be happy, it’s easy to let life get boring, or “collect dust” as famous painter Picasso states.

However, art makes life more amazing. Whether we take a day to stroll in the art museum or we’re listening to our favorite band, art makes life worth living.

3. “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

Georgia O’Keeffe was an American modernist painter. Her paintings embody unique abstract shapes with varying colors. She is especially known for painting vivid flowers, such as her petunias, roses, and tulips.

Her paintings vary throughout her life; for example, one of her most famous paintings is “Ram’s Head with Hollyhock” which features the skull of a ram in a mountainous landscape and a flower next to the skull.

Looking at O’Keefe’s paintings, they convey so many words and so much depth. She proves that art goes beyond language.

4. “The art of a people is a true mirror to their minds.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru was an Indian independence activist and was also the first Prime Minister of India when India became an independent nation in 1947. Gandhi was one of his mentors.

Even though his work centralizes around politics, he had a huge appreciation for the arts. He embodies the art we create as a way to look inside our minds.
